Costa Rican Weather

We’ve been living on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica for 7 months now – enough to experience both the rainy (or green) season and the dry season. We arrived in mid-May, and from then until mid-August the weather was perfect: 75-80 degrees, with a few hours of rain at least 3 or 4 times a week (including a number of truly spectacular thunderstorms). In August, it started raining a lot more – in fact, a friend from New York was visiting and unfortunately it rained nearly every day. The moment she left, the skies cleared and the weather was again gorgeous until late September, when it started raining more and more. For about 3 weeks in October, it rained almost non-stop, then it gradually died down. Now, in early December, it’s been dry for a couple of weeks. However, it’s also really hot – 85-90 degrees, and will just keep getting hotter and drier until April.

Other than a week in October when we went to NYC, we were here straight through the rainy season. Part-year residents can hardly believe that we didn’t leave for at least a couple of months. I’m not sure if they all just happened to experience a really bad rainy season, or if this last one was very mild (which I find hard to believe), or if we’re just really easy-going, but we weren’t all that bothered by it. Tourists and part-year residents have been arriving in droves, and I guess Christmas to late January is the true high season, when the beaches will be covered in bodies. But my husband and I agreed that the early rainy season (May to July) was much more pleasant than this relentless heat. I don’t know – maybe the fact that everyone else is coming here from cold and windy places makes the heat somehow more palatable. But if and when we ever come back to Costa Rica, it will definitely be in the rainy season, not the dry.

Thanks for all of the great information on Costa Rica. I will be going there to visit for 2 weeks at the end of this month and all of this information is very helpful. Thanks so much for sharing, I really appreciate it. Is everything in Costa Rica cheaper than the states? Or just some things?
