Centre Pompidou in Metz, France

Yesterday, I featured a French listening exercise about the Centre Pompidou being built in Metz. I think this “franchizing” of museums in different cities is fantastic. I visited the Bilbao Guggenheim several years ago, and I can’t wait to see the new Metz Centre Pompidou. But I do wonder whether it’s really necessary to attach [...]

Crash

I finally saw the movie Crash this weekend. Wow. What an amazing mix of horrible and heart-warming stories, and unexpected switches between the two extremes. At one point, I was crying so hard that I nearly started hyperventilating. The only other movies that have moved me quite like that were Requiem for a Dream and [...]

Which came first?

At long last, the answer to a question that has boggled humankind: Chicken and egg debate unscrambled (CNN) Can anyone else think of, oh, about ten million better uses for the time (and probably money) spent on this research?

CouchSurfing

Just found this site and I think it’s a brilliant concept. CouchSurfing is a community of tens of thousands of people in 200 countries who like to travel and to meet people. If you’re going to, say, Barcelona, you do a search to find people who live there and are willing to meet or even [...]

What’s up with Wikipedia?

I love the idea of Wikipedia, but the reality is less interesting. For some reason, the editors of the French language page have a vendetta against external links. I honestly believe that Learn French at About is one of the best French sites on the internet, but every time I add it to Wikipedia, someone [...]

Traveling Overseas

So far, I’ve been to 11 countries: Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, England, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, and Morocco. My favorite is France (of course), but I also love Costa Rica (for the natural beauty) and Italy (for the food and architecture). At the top of my list of places I’d like to see [...]

Amused vs Bemused

Have you ever noticed that quite a lot of people say “bemused” when they really mean “amused”? My theory on why this happens is in my article amused vs bemused; what are your thoughts?

Collecting

Just about everyone I know collects something. I collect silver jewelry with people motifs and pretty much anything purple. I also have a thing for multi-colored pens and Fiestaware stick-handled cups. What about you?

Learn French

This isn’t the kind of thing I would normally blog about, but I’m just so happy. For about 8 months, I’ve been trying to get my site into the top spot in Google for the phrase learn French, and today I’m finally there. It may not last, but it feels great right now!

Computer Problems, part 2

Another common problem I see with (Windows) computers is that most people don’t update them. Microsoft has an online tool called Windows Updates which automatically determines which updates your computer needs and downloads/installs them for you. All you have to do is go to the site regularly (at least once a month), follow the on-screen [...]
