Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married

Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married - 5 hearts awardI love, love, love Marian Keyes’s Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married. Though it’s not perfect (see spoilers, below), I enjoy the story and particularly certain scenes so much that I’m still able to reread it regularly and enjoy it just as much each time I do. I really like Lucy, and overall the book is very funny and believable.

SPOILERS Lucy is blatantly “weightist.” At one point she is furious when she thinks someone is mocking Meredia’s weight, yet Lucy repeatedly does this herself throughout the book.

The whole dealing-with-her-dad’s-alcoholism section is fairly hefty and can be a bit of a drag to read. But it works.

I love the scenes with Daniel at the restaurant, in his car, and at his apartment; and I love the Indian restaurant, and all the roommate stuff, and the work avoidance… it’s all great.

Hi, after reading your blog, I have a suggestion for a book that you might really like to read/review on your site– “Enlightenment for Idiots” by Anne Cushman. In the name of full disclosure, I am the personal assistant for this writer. However, I knew I wanted to work for this writer because her book is smart, funny, and inspiring. Enlightment for Idiots revolves around the life of Amanda, a twenty-nine year old yoga instructor and freelance writer who gets assigned to write a “For Idiots” guide to Enlightment. On the way, Amanda contends with a boyfriend who doesn’t call back, an unplanned pregnancy, and trendy gurus who don’t quite “get it.” It’s kind of a cross between “Sex in the City,” and “Eat, Pray, Love.” Seeing some of the other novels you enjoy, I think this witty and fun book might be right up your alley.

    Hi Kate,

Thanks for the suggestion – it does sound like something I’d like. I’ll add it to my (long) list of books to buy – unless you’d like to ask your boss to send me a review copy.

    Thanks again –

    LKL
