Our next stop was Coquimbo, where from the dock we saw la Cruz del Tercer Milenio – a giant, oddly stylized cross built in 2000.

However, we didn’t visit Coquimbo: our chosen excursion took us to the town of Vicuña, a major center for pisco production that is most famous for being the birthplace of the poet Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American author to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature. Her face is immortalized in a giant sculpture set in a circular pool in the center of town.
