They have completely different meanings, but whenever I see either one I have to think for a minute about which one it is. Of course I know what they mean, it&#8217;s just that the &#8220;philan&#8221; at the beginning of both words throws me off, so I thought I&#8217;d take a look at the etymology.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- LKL blog --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:320px;height:100px\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7405737365307581\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9677979794\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>A philanderer is a man who has lots of affairs. The word <i>philander<\/i>, meaning lover, comes from <i>Philander<\/i>, a former literary name for a lover, from <i>philandros<\/i> (Greek) meaning loving\/fond of men, from the root <i>phil<\/i> (loving\/fond) + <i>andr<\/i> (man). Interesting&#8230; the etymology kind of makes it sound like it should be synonymous with homosexual.<\/p>\n<p>A philanthropist is someone who assists charitable causes. <i>Philanthropy<\/i> is from <i>philanthropia<\/i> (Latin) from <i>philanthropos<\/i> (Greek) meaning humane\/benevolent, from the same root <i>phil<\/i> + <i>anthropos<\/i> meaning mankind.<\/p>\n<p>Very interesting. So a philanderer is a man who loves men (or rather women), while a philanthropist loves mankind.
