Australian Chick Lit?

I can’t remember ever reading any chick lit by an Australian author, but I’m sure there is some. If you know of any – good or bad – please let me know so that I can try to round out my coverage of chick lit from English-speaking countries.

A friend of mine works for Random House and let me sneak a read of Kathy Lette’s next novel called To Love Honour and Betray. It’s a brilliant chick-lit romantic novel set in Australia. (And I think Ms Lette is Ausrtralian, too.) Very funny, and very true to life. It’s about a wife who moves to Australia where her husb betrays her and runs off with someone else. She hates the country but gradually finds a BF and enrols in surf school. I never thought anything of Kathy Lette before I read this but it’s lovely and very satisfying – and has a romantic, happy ending. It comes out very soon.

It’s not strictly chick lit, but Helen Garner is Australian and her latest novel, The Spare Room, was published quite recently. It’s about two women, one of whom is battling cancer and her friend lets her stay her spare room while she undergoes some radical therapy.

Well personally I love “Looking For Alibrandi” (book is so much better than the movie) and “Saving Francesca”, both by Melina Marchetta. Both books are aimed at teens/young woman and are stories surrounding the turmoils of love, family and friendship.
