Moving to Costa Rica!
Since the French visa just isn’t happening, we started considering other options, and the one we decided on is Costa Rica. We’ve been there twice, love the country and the people, it’s not super expensive, there are no insanely complicated visa requirements, we can work on our Spanish… it’s win-win-win-win-win! We’re planning on at least a year, maybe two. If the French visa does somehow show up during that time, we’ll discuss it then, but for now we’re tired of waiting around. Costa Rica, here we come (in mid-May)!

Laura,
The idea that
the originator of the best French Language site
in English on the web today would find it
difficult to obtain a French Visa
is stupefying!
However, Costa Rica’s
gain!

Bonjour, Madame! I’m making steady headway appreciating the nuances of French
grammar by taking local classes and utilizing your excellent about.com resource. As an admirer
of the language and (mostly) all things French, it breaks my heart to see the cold and
inhospitable manner in which you’ve been treated by the administrative policy-making nut jobs
over there. If you’ve yet to be wholeheartedly welcomed into the arms of the French Republic,
what chance would I expect to have of moving there for good? Considering the wonderful
contributions you’ve made to bring the beauty and virtue of the language to all walks of life
here online, I’m truly saddened to have sat by and witnessed your dream dissolve.
One
the other hand, I’m happy to learn you’ve decided to visit Central America. I have a good
friend who, having retired, moved from the San Francisco bay area to Nicaragua where he happily
teaches English today. Here’s to change (tchin, tchin)!
Yours,
Keith

Salut Don and Keith -
Thanks for your support. In fact, I think it’s for
the best. I was bitterly disappointed for a long time, but now I get to spend a year in a
tropical paradise, which is another dream come true. I can always try again for the visa
later.

I think you will LOVE Costa Rica. I also can’t understand why the French wouldn’t
welcome you with open arms.
But, their loss.
