US Southwest, in sum

So that’s it. We spent 14 days in the US southwest, during which we visited 6 states: Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas, plus the Mexican state of Chihuahua. We flew from Philadelphia to Las Vegas, drove 2,757 miles, hiked at least 15 miles, took over 200 pictures, and flew home from El Paso. I only went online once. We saved at least $20 by purchasing America The Beautiful, the national parks and federal recreational lands annual pass. We actually bought it after we’d already been to several parks, but since we had the receipts and it had been less than two weeks since our visit, they credited our entrance fees against the cost of the pass ($80).

We had a great time, but we felt pretty burnt out by around day 10. Now we’re back safe and sound, packing up for our move to Costa Rica next week. ¡Hasta luego!

Arches National Park, Four Corners, Mesa Verde (days 7 and 8)

Arches National ParkThe next morning, it took us a long time to drive up to Arches National Park, due to sleet and road construction, but then it cleared up for a couple of hours. We hiked to one arch, but on our way to another, it started raining and got very cold, so we headed back.

Mesa Verde - Cliff PalaceOur next stop was Kelly Place, a bed + breakfast and retreat center near Cortez, Colorado, where we enjoyed chatting with a hiking club from California. The next morning the weather wasn’t very nice, so we drove many miles out of our way to Four Corners to experience being in four different states at once, then drove back to Mesa Verde and got a great look at Cliff Palace.
