Vegetables are brain food

A new study shows a correlation between consumption of vegetables and cognitive activity – according to the results, older people who eat lots of vegetables may have considerably less age-related mental decline than those who don’t. Interestingly, fruit consumption didn’t seem to have an effect one way or the other. But it’s still nice to see yet another argument for vegetarianism. 🙂

The Golden Gate Hotel

During my recent trip to San Francisco, I stayed at The Golden Gate Hotel on Bush Street, which was so lovely that I decided to blog about it. I found it online and chose it partly due to the location (I had two days of meetings near Union Square), partly due to price (it was one of the cheapest lodging options I found), and partly due to features (I love bed and breakfasts and this one was described as European, which sounded interesting). In any case, it turned out to be a great choice – our room was darling, the staff was delightful, and the warm croissants were divine. If you need a place to stay in SF, I highly recommend The Golden Gate Hotel.

LKL

Stands for Laura Kismet Lawless, of course! But what else? A quick search on Google reveals that “my” initials are used by quite a few people, places, and things:

  • Laeko-Libuat (language of Papua New Guinea)
  • Lakselv Airport, Banak (airport code)
  • Lietuvos krepÅ¡inio lyga (Lithuanian Basketball League)
  • Larry King Live
  • London Knowledge Lab (social software)
  • Loring, King and Loring (UK agricultural recruitment company)
  • Lynn, Kiecke, Lackey & Eason Insurance (Texas)

And here are few other uses, but I can’t figure out what LKL stands for:

  • LKL Advance Metaltech Sdn Bhd. (Malaysia)
  • LKL Oceantrade, Inc. (Netherlands)
  • lkl is “a userspace keylogger for x86 architecture”

Inspirational quote

I’m not a big fan of inspirational quotes, but there is one that I really like: “Why not go out on a limb? That’s where all the fruit is.” I’d always thought this was by Mark Twain, but when I Googled it, I found a couple of sites that attribute the very similar “Why not go out on a limb? Isn’t that where the fruit is?” to Frank Scully (whoever that is) or Will Rogers. Hmm. In any case, I’ve seen a number of other funny and/or clever quotes by Mark Twain recently, including “Names are not always what they seem. The common Welsh name Bzjxxlwcp is pronounced Jackson.” :-] I may have to go to the library soon and pick up some of Mark Twain’s books.
